A Large Site in Nottingham
Nottingham, NG4
Brief
We received an enquiry from a new client based in Birmingham. They had previously worked with another company who did all their asbestos work, however they were unavailable. After searching for an asbestos company in Nottingham they contacted ICE Asbestos. We went to the site and had a meeting, the quote was accepted and the new client was happy to continue.
The contract was a large Artex ceiling job which had to be carried out under negative pressure, a two stage airlock along with a decontamination unit being on site for operatives to use at the end of each shift.
Solution / Action Taken
This job was notifiable non-licenced work (NNLW). As this was a new client they had their own way of planning jobs therefore we had to readapt our plan of work. We split the site / building in to 3 areas, even though the work was non-notifiable it was easier to manage the site by splitting it in to sections as there was a total of 18 rooms. The work was to go in the building and remove the plasterboard ceiling with Artex attached. We also removed the MMMF insulation.
When we entered the building we sealed the walls and floor out and constructed a 2 stage air lock to the entrance of each area along with a negative pressure unit and roving head so everything was contained and the fibre levels were kept under the control limits.
Artex over a certain size is classed as notifiable non-licenced work, therefore we had to add negative pressure. We cordoned the area off, put in place a transit and waste route. We used red and black and red and white tape which indicates warning, separating and creating a barrier and installed CCTV to allow the client and site supervisor to monitor the removal works being carried out in the areas
As it was a warm week when we were carrying out this job, we had to ensure everybody was working safely and there was no heat exhaustion. We had a thermometer inside the enclosure where readings were being taken every hour. And operatives were signed in and out of the enclosures so we were aware of who was working and for how long. Regular breaks were mandatory to ensure there was no exhaustion.
Works were carried out to our plan of work and risk assessment using surface spray mist wetting, hand held tools and H type vacuums for final cleaning.
Visual and re-assurance air testing was carried out to each area on completion of the work to confirm that they were safe to hand back over to the client.
We are happy to announce that ICE Asbestos was audited on site by our client and also the owner of the building without knowledge and received good feedback. We also picked up two new clients on this current job.
